The fall season has arrived, and cooler weather is finally on the way. Many of you are probably already getting out your rakes, stocking up on leaf bags, or decorating for Halloween. But what you might not realize is that there are several security concerns you need to be aware of during the fall season.
Burglary, theft and home invasions can happen year-round. But as the seasons change, these culprits use different strategies to commit their crimes and avoid detection.
By taking action now, you can help deter these criminals and protect your family from a dangerous situation. Here's a quick list of tips on how to do it.
1. Keep your house well lit. The fall season means shorter days and earlier nightfall. As the sun starts setting earlier, make sure you're turning on lights earlier to keep your home well lit. That includes interior and exterior lighting.
If a burglar has a choice between a well lit home and one that is completely dark, he'll go for the dark one. Turn on lights, or talk to your Security Doctors Authorized Dealer about adding automated lighting to your security system.
2. Lock windows & doors nightly. Now that the weather is cooler, you'll be temped to turn off the A/C and let some fresh air in. Just make sure you close and lock your windows every night, before you go to bed or leave the house.
Make no mistake: burglars are looking for the easiest possible entry into a home. If you're not locking up, your home could be next.
3. Keep your yard clean. If burglars find any sign that you're not home, then they'll consider it an invitation to come inside. Don't let fallen leaves pile up too much. Keep the grass mowed. Make your entire yard tidy, front and back.
Also, be sure not to leave items lying around, such as rakes, tools, wheelbarrows and so on. These items could be easily stolen, and burglars will see this as a sign that the homeowner doesn't care about security.
